How to prepare an iPhone for resale or recycling

November 3, 2026 | 3 minutes read

Prepare an iPhone for handover by separating the information you need to keep from the account and erasure steps required for the device. Follow Apple’s current handover instructions for the phone and configuration involved.

This guide uses Apple’s iPhone and iPad handover guidance, consulted on 3 November 2026. It is not a universal menu sequence for Android devices or every older software version.

Check that the information and account access you need are available on the intended replacement arrangement. Keeping that transfer check separate from the handover steps makes both easier to follow. Apple’s current instructions can then guide preparation of the old device for its next owner.

Confirm what must remain available

Check that necessary information and account access have transferred appropriately before erasing the old device. Include any authentication or service access you still depend on. The fact that a new phone starts successfully does not establish that every important item is present.

Follow the complete manufacturer process

Apple separates transferring information, signing out and using Erase All Content and Settings. Its guidance also addresses trusted devices and the handling of eSIM during a sale. Follow the branches of Apple’s current instructions that apply to the device and account arrangement.

Keep device erasure and cloud-file management separate

Apple states that erasing the device does not delete its content from iCloud. Use Apple’s handover guidance for the device-erasure steps and its separate guidance for managing synced content. If the old phone is already unavailable, use the separate instructions for that situation instead of assuming the same on-device steps remain possible.

Separate transfer, preparation and handover

Use three stages in the working checklist. First, confirm the information and account access you need after the move. Second, follow Apple’s current preparation and erasure instructions for the device. Third, complete the physical handover and record what is included.

The checklist organises the process; Apple’s guidance supplies the exact steps and any account, SIM, eSIM or paired-device branches relevant to the particular phone.

Include the access you use less often

Think through services used during an ordinary week as well as the obvious photos and messages. An authentication app, a work account or another service may have its own transfer instructions. Identify those dependencies while the old device remains available.

If selling, retain the agreed description, included accessories and transaction record privately. Keep the buyer’s information separate from any public listing. Before the handover, compare the prepared item with the agreed contents. A clear record helps both people complete the transaction without putting personal account information into the sale materials. Questions about a particular preparation step should return to the relevant current Apple or service instructions.

An ordinary day’s services make a useful review list before handover. Include communication, authentication and any other access that currently depends on the phone. Confirming the relevant transfer steps while the device is available gives the process a clear order.
